"School Work: one day in the life of an outstanding secondary school"
A unique pictorial insight into the daily activity of an inner-city school
"Everyone, from the premises staff to the administration office and the teaching staff, has a vital role to play in a school" says Linda Austin, Head Teacher of Swanlea School, located in the historic Whitechapel area of London’s East End.
"School Work", is published today by photographer and teacher Louis Berk, who is Head of Sixth Form in Swanlea School. Contained within the 80 pages of the book are nearly 100 full colour photographs recording a wide range of activities by members of staff. It is believed that this is a unique documentary insight never before produced in the UK.
"What this book shows is the important contribution which all staff make towards the success of a large secondary school", says Linda Austin. "Louis Berk provides us with a bird’s eye view of a day in the life of an outstanding school as told through the work of our staff", she adds.
"When I learned of Louis Berk’s book it seemed an excellent opportunity for our Young Chamber business to work in partnership to sell the book", says Yasmin Latif, who organises Young Chamber activities at Swanlea School. "Our students have started a stationery business with the help of Young Chamber advisors and we decided to offer the book along with the pens, pencils and paper to our customers, who are both students and staff members".
"Working with the Young Chamber project is at the heart of what "School Work" is all about", says Louis Berk. "This book, for the first time, gives a valuable insight into school activities, an important one being the extra-curricular enterprise activities supported by members of staff and organisations outside the school."
"School work is published by Louis Berk and directly available to members of the Young Chamber network. The price is £18 plus postage of £2 and can be ordered by sending a cheque payable to Swanlea School for my attention at our school address: 31 Brady Street, London E1 5DJ", says Yasmin Latif.
